Which to Use - ER or Urgent Care?

WHEN TO USE URGENT CARE:

Urgent Care centers address a specific problem during a one-time visit. Patients should visit their primary care providers for follow-up care. St. Joseph Heritage Medical Group Urgent Care Centers are managed by board-certified primary care physician who are highly skilled in treating the following conditions:

  • Sprains and simple fractures (sports injuries)
  • Ear infections
  • Sinus infections and sore throats
  • Colds and flu symptoms
  • Mild allergic reactions
  • Mild asthma
  • Fever without rash
  • Animal bites
  • Minor cuts and burns
  • Urinary tract infections

For emergencies or life-threatening situations, please call 911 immediately or go to the nearest emergency room.

WHEN TO USE THE EMERGENCY ROOM (ER):

Don’t take chances with any condition that may be more serious or life-threatening. The ER is better equipped to care for you in the event of:

  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Severe, sudden pain
  • Severe bleeding
  • Head injuries and other traumatic injuries
  • Loss of consciousness/passing out
  • Severe trouble breathing
  • Chest pain
  • Sudden eyesight problems
    (blurriness or loss of vision)

Our Urgent Care Centers are here to handle life’s little surprises.

Illness or injury can happen at the most inconvenient times and some issues just can't wait until you can get in to see your primary care doctor. When medical situations arise, but do not pose an immediate or serious threat, you may want to consider visiting one of our urgent care locations for a more convenient, less-expensive choice for situations that require immediate medical attention, but are not life-threatening in nature.

Our urgent care centers are fully connected to the St. Joseph Hoag Health network, ensuring that details pertaining to your urgent care visit are part of your electronic medical record which helps to facilitate communication back to your primary care physician. If this is your first visit to one of our urgent care centers, we will be happy to help you find a primary care physician at St. Joseph Heritage Medical Group who’s right for you!
